MOFA slams latest report of diplomatic corruption

DIPLOMACY Ministry officials have dismissed allegations that Taiwan's ambassador to the Marshall Islands attempted to buy votes in the interests of keeping in office the country's former president, who favored maintaining formal ties with Taiwan

Kabua's administration was noted for its friendly ties with Taiwan. The new government, while promising to maintain formal relations with Taipei, has formed a task force to review diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

But Taiwan's foreign ministry said the Marshalls' government is reviewing cooperative plans between the two countries and not diplomatic relations.

Foreign minister Chen Chien-jen (程建人) is scheduled to lead a delegation to the Marshall Islands and Palau next month.

During a task force review of relations with Taipei initiated by Note last week, a Marshall Islands official said: "We will take everything in the relationship [with Taiwan] into consideration."
