It isn't that policemen in Taipei can't hit the broad side of a barn, but a recent live-fire test given to officers found that one out of four failed in marksmanship.
The results were so poor that Chief of the Taipei Police Administration, Wang Jinn-wang (¤ý¶i©ô), has ordered the officers who failed to undergo special training, according to local media reports.
Nearly 8,000 policemen in Taipei joined a regular handgun shooting examination held by the Taipei Police Office last year, and 1,924 of the officers reportedly failed.
Wang, shocked by the result, ordered a special shooting class for the policemen who failed the test, said the report.
The two-day classes will include a 50-minute meditation session, a demonstration on the proper techniques for using a firearm, and one-to-one training, according to reports.
The municipal police administration has already organized three classes and 11 more are being scheduled.
The administration, meanwhile, is set to organize another test after the class. Those who fail the next time around will be forced to attend monthly refresher courses and their performance will be entered into their permanent records.
According to a survey of the police officers on the Taipei force, a lack of shooting ranges for target practice is one of the major reasons why so many officers failed.
