OFF THE BEAT

`Chinese Oscar' night in Taipei

As always, the 36th annual Golden Horse awards ceremony on Dec. 12 in Taipei promises to be full of the usual cinema fanfare and celebrity pomp. The festival is the largest such event dedicated solely to honoring Chinese-language film, so most of the brightest stars in Chinese-language film will be present. From abroad will come one well-known Japanese actress. Expect also the usual bevvy of Hong Kong stars and starlets. The Taiwan show business industry will be out in full force, too of course.

Camera-toting fans will begin gathering out the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall around 6 pm -- when the awards ceremony is set to be held -- trying to catch glimpses of their favorite actors and actresses. The show will be held inside the hall beginning at around 7pm, with a later TV pick-up (edited, of course, for brevity's sake and commercials) the same night.

Among the films nominated for Best Picture is Chang Tso-chi's Darkness and Light, which also picked up the Best Picture award at the recent Tokyo International Film Festival.

Cross-strait note: Films from China were invited to enter the Golden Horse festival, but no entries were registered.
