Chinan under borrowed roof

RELOCATION Students from Nantou's Chinan University resume classes in Taipei amid criticism that they abandoned important relief work at home

According to Hsiang, a committee to help reconstruction work in Puli was formed and had its first meeting yesterday.

"We still have some teachers staying in Puli to help with reconstruction in the community," said Hsu Hong (徐泓), NCNU's dean of academic affairs. Hsu said professors including Chiang Ta-shu (江大樹) from Public Administration Studies and Chan Yi-chang (詹宜彰) from the Social Work Department and Huang Mei-ying (黃美英) from Anthropology had begun research work for Puli township reconstruction.

However, the resumption of NCNU after the disaster still faces objection.

Wong Ming-chang (翁銘章), an economics professor, said the decision to resume school temporarily in Taipei was made by only a handful of people at the university. Teachers were not respected, he said, especially for those who were locals and had difficulties relocating to Taipei.

DPP legislator Tsai Hunag-lang said Lee had disgraced the university by his action. According to Tsai, Puli high school faces an even more difficult situation than NCNU.

"After the quake, teachers and students automatically formed relief teams for the residents, while people from the university did nothing but leave in haste," said Tsai.
