Greater Tainan’s Lin Long Dance Group is traveling to Italy to take part in an international art festival this month. They will be performing 10 shows in the Italian town of Imola. The group’s performances will include themes that are related to Taiwan’s traditional festivals and budaixi puppet theater, displaying the energy of Taiwanese dance.
Lin Long Dance Group has gone on tour abroad 17 times, including tours in the US, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Australia. In letting the world enjoy the beauty of Taiwan, they have even performed at Sweden’s Alfred Nobel Hall. Huang Lee-hua, the artistic director of the dance group, says that the tour in Italy this time consists of a series of dances with Taiwan-related themes, using the fondness Taiwanese have for the land they live on to express the unique characteristics of Taiwanese dance. The performances will include pieces that exhibit Taiwanese sentiments and local traditional themes, for example, “The Beauty of a Precious Island,” “Tong Blossoms Sending Sentiments,“ “Dancing on the High Hill,” “Majestic Fort Provintia,” and “The Stunning Beauty of Taiwan.”
Huang says that the rich cultural assets of Taiwan provide excellent material for dance choreography, especially the local elements found in the Greater Tainan area where the troupe is based. She also says that the profound artistic energy encapsulated in the area and embedded in its abundant dance idioms is bound to leave you breathless.
