People’s homes are becoming increasingly humid with all of the plum rains and typhoon showers we have had in recent days. Yeh Chia-chou, a doctor of Chinese medicine at Dalin Tzu Chi General Hospital in Chiayi County, says that sometimes people need to dehumidify because they can also get moldy. He says that in recent days many people have been suffering from diarrhea, sore joints and getting rashes due to the humid weather, which in turn can cause the body to ineffectively metabolize water, and obstruct the flow of qi (the invisible life force or energy that according to traditional Chinese medicine resides in every living thing). Yeh recommends people exercise more so that they can perspire more, and also says people can use Chinese medicine to increase stomach health and get rid of humid qi inside the body.
Yeh also says that sweating, urination, and even diarrhea help to get rid of extra water that builds up in the body. The more humidity in the air, the more difficult it is for the body to excrete water, he says, adding that in order to get rid of excess water, the body naturally heats up, which sometimes causes diarrhea.
He says that lately a lot of people have felt dizzy, had sore joins, felt fatigued or that their body is heavier than usual. In severe cases, people will have diarrhea and vomiting. If the body cannot get rid of the water, it can cause bloating, urinary tract infections, leukorrhea in women, allergies, skin rashes, ringworms, or asthma.
Yeh says that one should be more mindful, not allowing oneself to remain in an overly humid environment for an extended period of time, make sure that air is circulating through the house, and be sure to dry one’s hair after showering to avoid dizziness and headaches. He also says that cabbage, radishes, tomatoes and watermelon should not be consumed in large quantities because they affect the normal functions of the intestines and stomach, and lower the efficiency of the body to metabolize water.
