On Sunday, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) ultraviolet index (UVI) forecast indicated “dangerous” ultra violet (UV) levels for Hualien, Taitung and Penghu, while in all other areas of the country UV levels were “extreme.”

According to the EPA UVI monitoring system’s classification levels, a UV index of between eight and 10 is extreme, while anything at 11 or above is classified as dangerous. On Sunday UV levels in Hualien, Taitung and Penghu reached 11 or above and in all other areas of the country levels were between eight and 10.

The EPA says members of the public living in areas where the index indicates extreme levels of UV will become sunburnt after being exposed to the sun for 20 minutes, while those living in areas with dangerous levels of UV will burn after 15 minutes of exposure to the sun.

The EPA advises that the public should, so far as is possible, refrain from going outdoors between 10am and 2pm. If going outside during these times, the EPA advises taking adequate steps to protect oneself from the sun and to stay in shady areas.(CNA, TRANSLATED BY EDWARD JONES)
