In Yilan County’s Yuanshan Township, a woman on a bike was rear-ended by a sport utility vehicle (SUV) in the early hours of April 27. The driver, allegedly responsible for the crash, got out of the SUV and dragged the woman to the opposite lane to fake a bike fall. He then went to a nearby store to ask for help with calling the police, claiming the woman had fallen off the bike while riding on her own. The driver apparently thought truth can be concealed – when the security cameras in fact recorded everything.
In the morning of April 27, an 80 year-old woman surnamed Huang left her house on a bike to exercise. Her son, surnamed Lin, later received the bad news that his mother, having fallen off her bike, was hospitalized. However, when he saw his mother, he felt that her injuries were too serious to have been the result of a simple bike fall. He therefore did some detective work and asked residents in the area to provide security footage to help with the investigation.
Lin says the security footage clearly shows that a black SUV rear-ended his mother’s bike, and that after the collision the car continued on for about 50 meters, before eventually backing up to the crash site. The driver then exited the car, dragged Huang roughly to the opposite side of the road and put the bike next to her to fake a separate bike accident. The crash left Huang critically injured, and her family in great distress. They hope the responsible driver will turn himself in and have justice served.

The police says that they had found the son of the SUV owner, and that he had originally agreed to come to the police station to do a written report. The son stated he was in Taipei at the time and would arrive in Yilan in the afternoon, but still had not shown up by evening time. The police tried to call him, but he did not pick up. If he does not come forward, the police will issue an arrest warrant and detain him.

The strongest earthquake to hit Taiwan in 25 years killed at least 16 people and damaged dozens of buildings, but the destruction was largely contained thanks to decades of preparedness work. Taiwan sits on the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of intense seismic activity along the Pacific Rim, and — much like neighboring Japan — has a long history of catastrophic quakes. How does April 3 compare with other recent quakes? The April 3 earthquake, which measured 7.4 on the moment magnitude scale, was felt across Taiwan. It was the most severe since a 7.6 magnitude quake in 1999 killed
Around the time of the Dragon Boat Festival in June, the streets of Taiwan are filled with the delightful aroma of zongzi, a traditional snack made of sticky rice wrapped in leaves. The leaves are folded into a cone and then filled with sticky rice and other ingredients such as braised pork belly, peanuts and salted duck egg yolks. The filled leaves are then tightly tied with kitchen twine and ready for cooking. Dragon Boat Festival (n. phr.) 端午節 aroma
Everyone has seen a piece of fruit turn brown after being cut. Have you ever wondered why that happens? It is a common phenomenon that occurs due to a chemical reaction called enzymatic browning. The appearance, flavor and nutritional value of the fruit are all affected by this reaction. Some fruits, such as apples, pears, bananas, avocados and peaches, are more prone to enzymatic browning than others. These fruits contain high levels of an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase, or PPO for short. __1__ This causes a chain of chemical reactions that ultimately transforms the phenolic compounds into
