It’s almost lunar new year. Kuang Sai-chin, a descendant of the “lost” Republic of China (ROC) army in Thailand and Myanmar, opened up a Thai-style restaurant on Gongjian Road in Lioudu, after getting married and moving to Keelung. The food, inexpensive, tasty and authentic, not only attracts Southeast Asians looking for an antidote to their longing for home, it is also deeply popular with local residents. On Jan. 11, Kuang presented a 10-course Thai-style lunar new year meal, including “Shrimp in Yellow Curry” and “Crispy Trout.”
Forty-nine-year-old Kuang is a second generation Chinese Thai descendant of a member of the 93rd Division of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) “lost army” that settled in northern Thailand. She met her husband when she was working as a guide 14 years ago, and they once had a restaurant in the Linkou Industrial Park. Business there was brisk, as news of the quality of the food traveled fast through word-of-mouth but, as she was away from her husband and children, and they could only see each other on the weekends, she decided five years ago to go to the Lioudu Industrial Park and have another go at starting a business.
Despite the fact that her Tung Tung Thai-Style Snacks store, which is on the first floor within a community, is not particularly eye-catching, foodies often find the food unforgettable. The signature dish, “Spicy Pork with Basil,” uses holy basil from Thailand; the “Duck Red Curry in Coconut Milk” is served only at lunar new year, using Thai red curry and coconut milk poured over duck slices.

「通通泰式風味小吃」店面位在社區一樓,雖不起眼,料理卻常令老饕難忘,招牌「打拋豬肉」是來自泰國的打拋葉;「紅咖哩椰奶燒鴨」是限定年菜,選用泰國紅咖哩、椰奶將醬汁淋在鴨肉上。
