Taitung’s countywide sports competition, the Taitung Sport Games, kicked off at 8:30am on May 30 with County Commissioner Justin Huang presiding over the opening ceremony. After the athletes circled the stadium, they were followed by a drum team from Tunghai Junior High School and six students from Hsin Sheng Junior High School who entered the arena holding flags for the event. Su Huai-en, a 41kg weight class athlete from Hsin Sheng Junior High School and bronze medalist in the first Asian Junior Taekwondo Championship, took an oath on behalf of all the athletes.

Huang said that the county government plans to hold a nationwide junior high school sporting event next year. Even though Taitung County has a small population, it has made remarkable achievements in national competitive sports, including track and field, baseball, judo, wrestling, soccer, canoeing and other sports. Excelling candidates from this competition were chosen to form the team representing Taitung County as they advance to October’s National Games.

The Taitung Sport Games included nine sporting events, namely track and field, swimming, soft tennis, table tennis, badminton, judo, taekwondo, wrestling and basketball. The athletes participating in the track and field competitions on May 30 ran with all their might in hot and humid weather, striving for a medal. On the first day of the junior high school boys’ shot put, Tunghai Junior High’s Yang Po-en set a new record of 15.901 meters. Taitung City elementary schools’ second boys’ relay team completed the boys’ 400 meter relay race in a record-breaking 49.65 seconds, and the National Taitung University Affiliated Physical Education Junior High School team broke the record for the junior high school boys’ 400 meter relay in 44.22 seconds.
