Senior citizens hooked on swishing handset touchscreens should be wary of accelerated eyesight deterioration. A 65-year-old teacher surnamed Wang, who was already extremely near-sighted, developed cataracts after she started surfing the Internet on her retirement and had to have an operation to remove them. After the operation she continued to use her phone, and could not put it down. Within a month her eyesight deteriorated again, and her eyes became over-sensitive to light. She did not rest her eyes, and the cornea was damaged again, leaving her with dry eye syndrome. She was worried that if it got worse, she could lose her sight altogether.
After she retired, Wang had a lot of leisure time on her hands. Her main interests were reading magazines, surfing the Internet and reading ebooks, and chatting with her children and grandchildren on Facebook and Line. She would be looking at the screen and swiping her handset, all day, every day, until her eyesight deteriorated to the extent that she could no longer see clearly. Originally with 700 degree myopia, she developed cataracts and she was left with a LogMAR scale reading of only 0.2, which was restored to 0.8 on the scale after the operation in July this year.
After the operation Wang’s sight was restored, but she resumed using her phone every day. Before a month was up her eyesight had failed once more, and Yu Chih-chun, head of ophthalmology at Cheng Ching Hospital where she was admitted, tested her eyes and discovered that the reason her vision had deteriorated to 0.5 was because she had strained her eyes, and that she was at serious risk of going blind. She prescribed artificial tears for her and told her to stop using consumer electronics, computers and communication devices if she wanted her eyesight to get better.

During a press conference for World Sight Day on Oct 14, Yu and Show Chwan Memorial Hospital Vice President and ophthalmologist Lin Hung-yu said that reading the small fonts on mobile handsets, at a close distance and for long periods of time on the bright screen, means that it is easy to strain your eyes and make them tired, and this can lead to dry eye syndrome and serious myopia, and can accelerate the onset and worsening of damage to the retina, glaucoma, and cataracts. Yu said that older people, in particular, are less aware of when the situation is worsening, as their nerve endings are less sensitive and have dulled with age, so that when they sense that something is wrong their condition is already serious.
She pointed out that people in the older generation should restrict their use of consumer electronics, computers and communication devices, and when they do they should rest their eyes for ten minutes every half an hour, and should also get sufficient amounts of sleep and eat a lot of dark green vegetables.

A: Artificial intelligence technology has been causing controversy lately: a student was caught cheating with AI to win the grand prize in an art contest. B: That’s so absurd. Does this mean that AI paints better than humans? A: Maybe. Luckily, the student was later disqualified. B: And more absurdly, it’s becoming more and more popular to use AI technology to “resurrect” people. A: Yeah, some netizens even posted videos featuring the late singer CoCo Lee, who was “resurrected” by them with AI software. (By Eddy Chang, Taipei Times/台北時報張聖恩)
It’s no secret that Japanese people have a deep affection for noodles. Like in the rest of East Asia, noodles are an important staple food, second only to rice. Japanese people have enjoyed noodles for over 1,000 years. The first noodles came from China and were introduced around 800 CE. As time passed, noodles in Japan not only became widespread but also developed some unique Japanese characteristics. The three most popular types of noodles in Japan are ramen, soba, and udon. Ramen, typically made from wheat flour, is usually thin and firm. The dough is kneaded and left to
Rice is an essential ingredient in Taiwanese cuisine. Many foods are made of rice, adding more variety to our cooking, such as rice cake, or “gui.” Wagui is made by steaming rice flour batter in a bowl. The term “gui” refers to a type of food made from rice, while “wa” refers to a bowl. The pronunciation of “gui” in Taiwanese Hokkien is similar to the word for “nobility” in Chinese, so it is common for people to prepare various types of gui, including wagui, as offerings to the gods or ancestors,. nobility (n.) While Taiwan may not be
Continued from yesterday(延續自昨日) https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang As with many aspects of Japanese culture, there is etiquette to follow when you enjoy noodles. To fully experience noodles like a local on your next visit to Japan, consider these simple guidelines. First, be careful where you put your chopsticks. Don’t leave them sticking up in the broth or set them at the side of the bowl. When you have finished eating or if you’re taking a break, place them on the chopstick rest next to the bowl. Also, it is impolite to wave chopsticks around or bring them above mouth-level. Second, don’t take too
