The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), under the Ministry of Health and Welfare, said on July 29 that Taiwan’s first indigenous case of dengue fever this year appeared in New Taipei City’s Tamsui District two weeks ago. The infected person was a 29-year-old woman who first started showing symptoms of fever on July 19. After going to the hospital on July 23, tests confirmed that she had dengue. There was no record of recent international travel, but she had been in Greater Kaohsiung’s Cianjhen and Fongshan districts just before falling ill. The woman has been released from the hospital and is recuperating at home. None of her family members have shown any similar symptoms.
The CDC announced on July 29 that from July 22 to 28 the number of new dengue cases in Taiwan included four imported cases and 85 indigenous cases. Apart from the aforementioned case in New Taipei City’s Tamsui District, the other 84 indigenous cases include two people in Greater Tainan’s Yongkang and Annan districts, one case in Pingtung County’s Yenpu Township and two cases in Penghu County.
The other 79 cases include 28 people in Greater Kao-hsiung’s Fongshan District, 17 in Siaogang District, 12 in Lingya District, five in Cianjhin District, four cases each in both Cianjhen and Daliao districts, two cases in each of Zuoying and Sinsing districts and one case each in Sanmin, Wusong, Nanzih, Gangshan and Qishan districts. The disease is currently spreading to other boroughs throughout Greater Kaohsiung.

According to CDC statistics, as of July 28 there were already 412 dengue cases in the country. People are urged to get rid of all indoor and outdoor containers that might collect water and to take preventative measures against mosquitos. If you have recently visited a country that has a dengue epidemic or any areas in Taiwan currently experiencing an epidemic, you should alert the authorities as soon as possible if you start showing symptoms of having dengue, which includes fever, headaches, muscle soreness, pain behind the eyes and skin rash.

The strongest earthquake to hit Taiwan in 25 years killed at least 16 people and damaged dozens of buildings, but the destruction was largely contained thanks to decades of preparedness work. Taiwan sits on the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of intense seismic activity along the Pacific Rim, and — much like neighboring Japan — has a long history of catastrophic quakes. How does April 3 compare with other recent quakes? The April 3 earthquake, which measured 7.4 on the moment magnitude scale, was felt across Taiwan. The leaves are folded into a cone and then filled with sticky rice and other ingredients such as braised pork belly, peanuts and salted duck egg yolks. The filled leaves are then tightly tied with kitchen twine and ready for cooking. Dragon Boat Festival (n. phr.) 端午節 aroma
Everyone has seen a piece of fruit turn brown after being cut. Have you ever wondered why that happens? It is a common phenomenon that occurs due to a chemical reaction called enzymatic browning. The appearance, flavor and nutritional value of the fruit are all affected by this reaction. Some fruits, such as apples, pears, bananas, avocados and peaches, are more prone to enzymatic browning than others. These fruits contain high levels of an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase, or PPO for short. __1__ This causes a chain of chemical reactions that ultimately transforms the phenolic compounds into
