According to statistics from the National Police Agency (NPA), the number of people killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes last year decreased by 131 persons when compared to the year before. Greater Kaohsiung had the greatest reduction — 40 fewer fatalities — followed by Greater Taichung’s decrease of 21. Taitung County had the biggest increase in fatalities — seven — followed by an increase of two in Chiayi County. The overall number of people killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, however, is showing a downward trend.

The NPA’s Traffic Division says that last year 60,865 of the 118,864 drunk-driving violations received were processed in court and a total of 245 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes. Compared to the year prior, 5,756 fewer violations were received while 8,433 more were actually taken to court, and the number of fatalities significantly decreased by 131 people, the division says.

Beginning on June 13 last year, the Criminal Code stipulates that if a driver’s blood alcohol content exceeds 0.25mg/L, they face a prison term of up to two years, the division says, adding that alcohol-impaired drivers who cause fatal crashes or severe injuries face prison terms of up to 10 years or seven years respectively.
