Taiwan Haibizi Theater has invited Wang Mo-lin, a renowned master of experimental theater directing, known for being a bit of a maverick, to give a speech — “Orchid Island, Wushe, and Alishan — Wang Mo-lin’s Trilogy for the Taiwan Aboriginal Theater Movement.” Aside from discussing his contribution to the experimental theater movement, he will also be reflecting on his experiences working in Aboriginal theater.
Ever since entering the Political Warfare Cadres Academy as a theater major at the age of 20, Wang has worked in theater for 45 years, and his growth as an individual has been inseparable from theater. Among his works are Expelling the Demon of Orchid Island (1988), Descendants Shooting at the Sun – A Theatrical Report of the Wushe Incident (1990), and Tsou Oedipus (1997), three plays that are considered to be his “Taiwan Aboriginal Trilogy.” “It is how I deliberate upon modern Taiwanese theater,” he says of the trilogy. Wang also says it is important for young people working in experimental theater today to think about exactly who is in the vanguard and in control of the rights of speech, specifically when it comes to the stereotypes surrounding Aboriginal cultures, which typically represent culture as anthropological specimens.
The speech will be delivered at 2pm on May 5 at Taiwan Haibizi, which is located in the basement at No.120 Linsen S. Rd. in Taipei. For more information call 02-23583115.
