The 3rd National Indigenous Language Drama Competition will be held today and tomorrow at the New Taipei City government’s Multifunctional Hall. The Ifkids Theater Company is set to give a spectacular performance tonight, and tickets for the show are now available. New Taipei City’s Indigenous Peoples Bureau (IPB) said this year’s event is split into two — a family division and a regular group division. Thirty-six groups from across the nation have enlisted in the competition, and the first prize cash award for each team is NT$50,000 (US$1,689) for the family teams and NT$100,000 for the regular teams. The competition commenced last Wednesday with the family division, followed by “An Evening with Theater Stars,” at which the Aboriginal musical group RS and the Dulan Culture and Art Troupe gave brilliant performances.

The IPB said International Mother Language Day was on Feb. 21, and in order to promote mother languages, the Taiwanese Mother Language League organized an event in which speaking Hoklo (also known as Taiwanese) at select businesses would get you a discount. Nearly 100 clinics, clothing shops and restaurants across the nation participated in the event, which ended Feb. 25. All you had to do was use a language used in Taiwan, including Hoklo, Hakka or any Aboriginal language, and you could receive a 10 to 30 percent discount. Businesses that participated in the event are listed on the organization’s Web site:
