Opera Carnival Night — the biggest locally-produced opera production Greater Kaohsiung has ever seen — will have its premiere at Kaohsiung Cultural Center’s Chihteh Hall in Greater Kaohsiung this Thursday and Friday. Planned and produced by Huang Jeou-jiuan, dean of National Kaohsiung Normal University College of Arts, the production, accompanied by the Kaohsiung City Symphony Orchestra, features several Viennese opera singers and Taiwanese university students majoring in music.

Opera Carnival Night brings together the greatest hits in operas, such as Carmen, Cavalleria Rusticana (Rustic Chivalry), and Die Fledermaus (The Bat). The new production of classic operas will give audiences a unique combination of visual and auditory pleasure. The plots of all three operas include extramarital affairs, a much talked-about topic nowadays, which are interwoven into this new opera buffa (comic opera) to keep audiences entertained.

Huang stressed that Opera Carnival Night is a joint effort by talents from Germany, Italy, and Austria: German Theater Director Rupert Lummer, Italian Conductor Tiziano Duca, and Austrian Stage Designer Adolf Fruehauf.

Set to a score that incorporates favorites from French composer Georges Bizet’s Carmen, Italian composer Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana, and Austrian composer Johann Strauss II’s operetta Die Fledermaus, the new opera will have recitatives in Chinese to connect story threads into one extravaganza. The opera has been an unprecedented challenge for opera in Taiwan, and promises to be quite a spectacle.
