Amateur street photographers have become fairly common in Taiwan in recent years, and it is usually a good thing when they are able to capture a real beauty. However, a sexual harassment dispute involving a street photographer in Taipei has caused many people to feel indignation.
One day last week an amateur photographer surnamed Ting approached a tall attractive girl who looked remarkably like the famous singer Yang Lin, and asked her if he could take her picture. After taking her picture, he then asked if he could take one with her. While the picture was being taken he made V sign hand gestures with his right hand, and took it as an opportunity to touch her breasts several times, according to the woman. The police eventually arrested him based on the woman’s allegations. Ting, however, said he was falsely accused and asserted that people sometimes touch each other when they take pictures together. He said he did not make any unlawful gestures, and although he showed them photos he had previously taken to prove his point, the police still charged him with sexual harassment based on evidence provided by the girl.
According to the police investigation, on the night of Nov. 7, the 29-year-old Ting approached the 26-year-old beauty at the underground East Metro Mall near Taipei’s Zhongxiao Dunhua MRT station, saying that he was an amateur photographer and solicited her consent to let him take photos of her. After she consented, they began their amateur photo session right there.

After the woman returned home and thought about what had happened to her, the more she felt that Ting had taken advantage of her. She told her boyfriend and also called the number Ting had given her because she wanted to clear things up. Because the number did not work, she decided he was simply out to trick her.
After a few hours, she and her boyfriend went back to the scene of the incident to look for Ting, who had actually remained in the same spot searching for more people to photograph. She then went straight to the local police station to file a police report and asked to have him arrested, alleging that he had sexually harassed her.
The police would like to remind people that it is currently popular for street photographers to ask girls whom they think are attractive and have nice figures to let them take photos of them, and that it is easy for disputes to arise because the two parties involved — the photographer and the subject — are not well acquainted with one another. On the one hand, girls must keep their defenses up, and on the other, photographers must remember to maintain a proper distance between themselves and their female subjects. The police also say that since the two parties are not that familiar with each other, they must abstain from physical contact so that laws are not broken in a way that would be hard to explain to the police.

The strongest earthquake to hit Taiwan in 25 years killed at least 16 people and damaged dozens of buildings, but the destruction was largely contained thanks to decades of preparedness work. Taiwan sits on the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of intense seismic activity along the Pacific Rim, and — much like neighboring Japan — has a long history of catastrophic quakes. How does April 3 compare with other recent quakes? The April 3 earthquake, which measured 7.4 on the moment magnitude scale, was felt across Taiwan. It was the most severe since a 7.6 magnitude quake in 1999 killed
A: Artificial intelligence technology has been causing controversy lately: a student was caught cheating with AI to win the grand prize in an art contest. B: That’s so absurd. Does this mean that AI paints better than humans? A: Maybe. Luckily, the student was later disqualified. B: And more absurdly, it’s becoming more and more popular to use AI technology to “resurrect” people. A: Yeah, some netizens even posted videos featuring the late singer CoCo Lee, who was “resurrected” by them with AI software. (By Eddy Chang, Taipei Times/台北時報張聖恩)
Around the time of the Dragon Boat Festival in June, the streets of Taiwan are filled with the delightful aroma of zongzi, a traditional snack made of sticky rice wrapped in leaves. The leaves are folded into a cone and then filled with sticky rice and other ingredients such as braised pork belly, peanuts and salted duck egg yolks. The filled leaves are then tightly tied with kitchen twine and ready for cooking. Dragon Boat Festival (n. phr.) 端午節 aroma
It’s another school day with the same ritual. You wake up to your smartphone’s alarm, scroll through messages during your commute, and listen to your favorite playlist with your wireless earbuds between classes. These devices, integrated smoothly into your daily routine, certainly make life more convenient. However, where do these devices end up after you replace them? In fact, the issue of electronic waste is a growing global concern. According to the United Nations, in 2019 alone, we generated an astonishing 53.6 million tons of e-waste—an average of 7.3kg per person. Projections hint at the figure soaring to 110
