A restaurant in Chiayi is serving up a lot more than tasty food by offering to help single patrons find their dream partner. This extra service has brought quite a few lonely hearts to the restaurant, and has already been responsible for bringing 10 couples together.
The Bella Vida restaurant was established by three good friends who share a passion for food and art. One of the owners, Chang Su-er, used to be a cram school teacher, but quit the industry and then pooled her capital with two friends in order to pursue her dream of opening a restaurant. When she started offering the free matchmaking service, she had no idea it would become the restaurant’s defining feature.
So where did this idea originate from? Chang says a customer who worked for the Forestry Bureau once told her she didn’t have many opportunities to meet new people, which prompted Chang to set up the free matchmaking service.
Chang says that while many of the customers are teachers, lecturers and doctors who are doing well for themselves, they lack an effective strategy for meeting new people, so the restaurant simply fills this need. Professional men and women aged 25 and over are eligible for the introduction service. Chang first finds out some basic background information, then takes down their personal details and the desired qualities of their partner. If another applicant matches the requirements, Chang sets up a dinner date at the restaurant where the couple can get to know each other. So far the service has yielded 10 stable relationships.
According to the restaurant’s statistics, women outnumber men by four to one, with most of the applicants being well-educated teachers.
Chang says the restaurant is just an intermediary, and while she can make the introductions, the couples need to work hard to make their relationships work. She says they once had a male customer who failed to find love three times, but where there’s a will there’s a way, and even if Cupid’s arrow doesn’t strike, at least you’ll make a new friend.

Rice is an essential ingredient in Taiwanese cuisine. Many foods are made of rice, adding more variety to our cooking, such as rice cake, or “gui.” Wagui is made by steaming rice flour batter in a bowl. The term “gui” refers to a type of food made from rice, while “wa” refers to a bowl. The pronunciation of “gui” in Taiwanese Hokkien is similar to the word for “nobility” in Chinese, so it is common for people to prepare various types of gui, including wagui, as offerings to the gods or ancestors,. nobility (n.) While Taiwan may not be
On Tuesday last week, the flame for this summer’s Paris Olympics was lit at the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games in southern Greece in a meticulously choreographed ceremony. It will then be carried through Greece for more than 5,000km before being handed over to French organizers at the Athens venue used for the first modern Olympics in 1896. The pageantry at Olympia has been an essential part of every Olympics for nearly 90 years since the Games in Berlin. It’s meant to provide an ineluctable link between the modern event and the ancient Greek original on which it was initially modelled. Once
Continued from yesterday(延續自昨日) https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang As with many aspects of Japanese culture, there is etiquette to follow when you enjoy noodles. To fully experience noodles like a local on your next visit to Japan, consider these simple guidelines. First, be careful where you put your chopsticks. Don’t leave them sticking up in the broth or set them at the side of the bowl. When you have finished eating or if you’re taking a break, place them on the chopstick rest next to the bowl. Also, it is impolite to wave chopsticks around or bring them above mouth-level. Second, don’t take too
