Mark gets in shape
It was a hot summer’s day and Mark was in the back yard working on his suntan. He had a big glass of fresh lemonade and a huge bowel of ice cream. He was just thinking that it was a perfect day, when his best friend Kathleen turned up. She took one look at Mark and burst out laughing. “Oh my! You’ve really let yourself go,” she said pointing at his flabby belly. “You need to get yourself in shape. Come with me and I’ll give you a good work out.”
An hour later and they were at the gym. For the first time in his life Mark was wearing sporty clothes. Kathleen was wearing a headband and a t-shirt with “coach” written on it. “The first thing we’re going to do is an intensive cardio work out,” Kathleen said pointing to an exercise bike. Mark got on and cycled for 30 minutes. By the end, he was dripping with sweat and struggling for breath. “That was just your warm up. The treadmill is next,” said Kathleen. By the time they were finished, Mark had been on a stair climber, a rowing machine and a jump rope. He was exhausted.
“Is it time to go home?” Mark asked. “No chance. We’ve just begun!” Kathleen yelled, pointing to the weights room. The weights room was full of gorillas with huge muscles. “Are you sure this is a good idea? What if I get hurt?” Mark asked. “Don’t worry. I know what I’m doing,” said Kathleen. She guided Mark through the equipment, and by the time he was finished, he had done push-ups, pull-ups, bench presses and sit-ups. His entire body was in pain, but Kathleen looked delighted. “That was a great work out. Now, before you can go home, there just one more thing I want to show you…”
