If there is one place to avoid in a zoo, it's inside the tiger pit. A dog in Memphis, Tennessee, US, learned that lesson the hard way. Now it's recovering from wounds to its neck and shoulders.

"This is one lucky animal," Memphis Zoo spokesman Brian Carter said.

Earlier this month, the female retriever mix ran into the zoo and led workers on a chase. She finally jumped over a wall at the tiger exhibit.

She swam across a 3.7m wide pool to the inside of the exhibit. Once there, she was quickly attacked by a female tiger.

Zoo workers used fireworks to distract the tigers in the exhibit. The workers got them into an area they stay in at night.

One tiger had the dog in her grasp for several minutes.

After emergency treatment, the dog was taken to an animal medical center.

The dog was wearing a collar, Carter said. Zoo officials were trying to find the animal's owner. (STAFF WRITER, WITH AP)
