The early episodes of Sesame Street have just been released on DVD, but be warned! On the case is the message, "These early Sesame Street episodes are intended for grown-ups."
Sesame Street in the late 1960s and early 70s was a lot different than it is today. For example, the character Alistair Cookie used to smoke a pipe before eating it. Producer Carol-Lynn Parente said that was "the wrong behavior." So Alistair was dropped from the show.
In another example of how times have changed, in the first episode a lonely little girl became friends with an adult male. He then took her to his house for milk and cookies. To help teach kids to be careful around strangers, that doesn't happen on Sesame Street anymore.
Now even Cookie Monster eats a variety of food. Don't tell kids that it hasn't always been that way!
