Sunday Science: Chromatography 週日科學: 色譜分析法

Have you ever wondered how different colored inks are made? Try this week's experiment, you might be very surprised!

What you will need:

A coffee filter or some blotting paper

A piece of plain paper

A big jar

Some water-based colorful pens (felt tips work best)

Water

Sticky tape

Scissors

A pencil or a chopstick


■ Carefully cut your filter or blotting paper into strips. You need as many strips as colors of pen you want to test plus one. The strips should be about 15cm long, and about 2cm wide.

■ Take each of your pens and carefully make a colored square (1.5cm x 1.5cm) on plain paper with each pen.

■ Cut these squares out, and tape them near the top of each strip. One strip, the control strip, will not have a square.

■ On each strip draw the corresponding color. Make a straight, narrow line across the width of the strip about 1cm from the bottom.

■ Measure the width of the jar opening, and put two marks on the chopstick or the pencil that are that length apart.

■ Attach the strips to the chopstick or the pencil within the markings. Leave 0.5cm from the edge and between each strip. Make sure that the ends of the strips (furthest from the chopstick) are all even.

■ Place the chopstick over the jar. Mark where the ends of the strips reach to on the jar.

■ Remove the chopstick and fill the jar with water to just past (about 2mm) where the mark is.

■ Very carefully place the chopstick back over the jar. The ends of the filter paper should be just in the water.

■ Wait and watch! Be careful not to knock the jar. After about 10 minutes, carefully remove each strip and compare.(catherine Thomas, staff writer)

一枝鉛筆或筷子

■ 小心地將你的濾紙或吸墨紙裁成長條狀,紙條的數量要比準備的彩色筆顏色再多一條,每張紙條約需十五公分長、兩公分寬。

■ 用每一枝彩色筆仔細地在白紙上各畫一個方塊(邊長一公分半)。

■ 將這些方塊剪下,分別貼在每一張紙條上方。留一條不貼彩色方塊,作為對照組。

■ 用相同的顏色在每張紙條的底部上方約一公分處,畫一條細窄的橫線。

■ 測量罐子開口的寬度,在筷子或鉛筆上標示出與罐口同寬的兩點記號。

■ 將紙條貼在筷子或鉛筆的標記範圍內,左右兩端與各紙條間均留半公分間距,確認所有紙條的下端(離筷子最遠端)都對齊。

■ 將筷子架在罐口上,然後在罐身標示出紙條最下端的相對位置。

■ 將筷子移開後,在罐中倒入清水至剛好高於罐身標記約兩公釐處。

■ 非常小心地把筷子再放回罐口上,濾紙最下端應該剛剛好浸在水中。

■ 等著看會發生什麼變化!小心不要碰撞到罐子。經過約十分鐘後,小心地將紙條拿出來,並比較看看有什麼不同。
