Jackie Chan's son doesn't want to be an action star like his father.
While the Hollywood comedy Rush Hour 3 was another hit for Chan at the box office this summer, his 24-year-old son, Jaycee Chan, was mixing with the arty crowd at the Venice Film Festival.
With a major role in The Sun Also Rises, a Chinese-language movie that competed for the top Golden Lion prize in Venice, Chan was considered for acting honors alongside the likes of Adrien Brody and Michael Caine.
Neither Chan nor the film won any prizes, but his appearance highlighted his desire to chart a course distinct from his father's.
"I'm starting to carve my own path," he said. "I've made an art-house movie. ... My range is greater. I'm not just making action movies. I'm trying many different things."
Chan was born in Los Angeles and raised in Hong Kong. He attended high school in the US and studied for two years at the College of William & Mary in Virginia.
Casually dressed in a white T-shirt, pants and a Beijing Olympics cap, the lanky young man, who's inherited his father's big nose, bent over to shake a reporter's hand with both hands and kept answering questions even as an assistant tried to wrap up the interview.
His performance in The Sun Also Rises, a colorful, epic story set against China's brutal Cultural Revolution, got mixed reviews.
"In portraying very deep feelings through the look in his eyes, he's still a bit lacking," said Hong Kong director Stanley Kwan.
"I think the direction he's going in is very good," said Chinese director Jia Zhangke, a past winner at Venice. (AP)

Sylvester: Did you hear that Jackie Chan's son is also an actor?
Belvedere: Nope, but I'm not surprised. He probably has a lot of good connections to help him launch his career.
Sylvester: Yes, but I bet he'd like to step out of his father's shadow.
Belvedere: That'll be tough. Jackie Chan is one of Asia's funniest actors.
Sylvester: I was in stitches during Rush Hour 2.

To step out of someone's shadow means to stop being overshadowed or dwarfed by that person. For example, "Lucy still hasn't managed to step out of her older sister's shadow."

雖然此片與房祖名皆未獲獎，但這也凸顯了他所追求的夢想有別於他的父親。
「我正在開創屬於我自己的路，」他說：「我拍了一部藝術片…，我的戲路更寬，我不會只拍武打動作片，我嘗試各種不同的事物。」
房祖名出生於美國洛杉磯，在香港長大。他在美國唸高中，並在維吉尼亞州的威廉瑪莉學院讀過兩年書。
身著輕便的白色T恤、牛仔褲和一頂北京奧運紀念帽，這位瘦瘦高高的年輕人遺傳了他父親的招牌大鼻子，見面時會俯身用雙手和記者握手，並在他的助理試圖結束訪談時繼續回答問題。
