    Sunday Science: Ziplock bombs

It's time for some fun! This week we're going to make wicked ziplock bombs. You'll need to find a safe place to do this. It's probably best done outside.

    What you will need:

    Some ziplock bags

    Vinegar

    Warm water

    Sodium bicarbonate

    Some paper towels or tissue.

    A tablespoon

    Sunglasses (to protect your eyes)

A bucket or large bottle of water (for cleaning up)

    - Check the ziplock bag for holes or leaks (you can do this by putting a cup of water in the bag, sealing it and swishing it around).

    - Lay out a paper towel (if you are using tissue, use a double layer) on a flat surface.

    - Put one and a half tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate in the center of the paper towel.

    - Fold the paper towel to make an envelope or package of sodium bicarbonate.

    - Add vinegar and warm water to the ziplock bag at a ratio of 2:1 (two parts vinegar to one part warm water). The amount you use depends on the size of your ziplock bag. The bag should be about half full.

    - Very carefully, using the top of the ziplock bag, hold the sodium bicarbonate package in the bag, but out of the water and vinegar (see the picture).

    - Keeping the package out of the water and vinegar, seal the bag tightly.

    - Your bomb is ready to go. Place it on the floor, releasing the package, and stand well back!

    - Don't go back to the bomb if it seems to be taking a little while. If you do, it's sure to go off just as you're standing over it!

    - Make sure that you clean up after yourself. Rinse down the area and pick up the busted bag and dispose of it properly.

    What's the Science?

The paper towel or tissue helps delay the reaction so that you have time to stand back from your bomb. When the vinegar and warm water mix get in contact with the sodium bicarbonate, the vinegar, which is an acid, reacts to the sodium bicarbonate, which is an alkaline. The reaction makes carbon dioxide. The bag explodes when it can't hold anymore carbon dioxide.

    Science Journal

What do you know about vinegar? Is it an acid or an alkaline? How does vinegar react with water? What do you know about sodium bicarbonate? Is it an acid or an alkaline? How do you think sodium bicarbonate and vinegar will react? What if you add some heat (warm water)?
