水分從花的花瓣和葉片蒸發，這種過程稱作「蒸散作用」。因為花中的水分蒸散，花需要重新補充水分，因此吸管中的染料會被吸上來送至需要水分的地方。花的莖中有許多稱作「維管束」的微小管子。因為我們在實驗中將花莖切分，不同的顏色就通過不同的維管束向上傳送，最後到達花朵不同的部位。這種植物吸收水分的過程就稱為「毛細管作用」。
