Next weekend is the Lantern Festival. There are many ways to celebrate the Lantern Festival in Taiwan. Many towns have special displays of lanterns in the town center for people to enjoy.
Pingxi is in the mountains just outside Taipei. A long time ago there were no telephones or computers. The people who lived in the mountains needed to find a way to communicate with each other.
They came up with the smart idea of sending lanterns into the sky at night. This way they let each other know that they were safe and well.
Nowadays people go to Pingxi to let off lanterns for good luck. People paint messages with their names, hopes and dreams for the New Year on the lanterns.
The festival is lots of fun, and of course there are lots of street snacks available. There are special buses for the event, which will take you up to Pingshi from Muzha. Tomorrow night is the first big setting off of lanterns — but there is another big setting off on Lantern Festival itself, next Sunday.
