David Beckham will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season and join Los Angeles Galaxy on a five-year deal worth US$250 million (NT$8.2 billion).

The ever-popular soccer player had offers from Real Madrid, a French club and several top English clubs. It is thought that he decided against playing in England again to avoid having to play against his old team, Manchester United (widely known as Man. United or the Red Devils).

Soccer isn't a very popular sport in the US, and many people were surprised by Beckham's choice. However, Beckham had already shown an interest in US soccer by opening The David Beckham Academy at the Los Angeles Galaxy ground last year.

Beckham thanked the people of Madrid for the warm welcome they had given to his family and said, "I am proud to have played for two of the biggest clubs in football, and I look forward to the new challenge of growing the world's most popular game in a country that is as passionate about its sport as my own." (Catherine Thomas, staff writer)
