The French have long been famous for their culinary skills, but it appears that cooking is now more popular in Britain than in France.
The English newspaper The Observer made the claim based on the results of a survey. About half of the British people under the age of 35 who took the poll reportedly said that they either “loved” or “really loved” cooking, compared with only 40 percent of French people in the same age group.
The report was welcomed by at least one leading British chef, Alan Coxon, who was quoted as saying that France had “not been as energetic” as Britain in promoting fresh produce and had been “resting on its laurels” in recent years.

French chef Eric Chavot, from the Capital Hotel in London, told the newspaper he thought Britain’s current interest in and love for cooking was caused by the recent popularity of celebrity chefs, but also added that he did not think the results of the survey were incorrect.
However, Joanna Blythman, the author of Bad Food Britain, disagreed with the survey’s findings, telling the newspaper Britain had a long way to go before it caught up with France’s aptitude for cooking.
Healthy eating has been a major political issue in Britain recently because of concern about growing levels of obesity and diet-related illness among young people.
The government banned the sale of soft drinks and unhealthy food from schools in England this month and also announced plans to re-introduce cooking lessons in high schools. (AFP)

然而,《劣食英國》的作者喬安娜.布萊斯曼對民調結果則持相反意見,她說英國要趕上法國對廚藝的天賦,還有很長的一段路要走。
由於關心年輕人肥胖成長的趨勢及飲食引發的相關疾病,健康飲食在近日已成為英國一項重大的政治議題。
英國政府本月已禁止學校販售碳酸飲料與不健康的食物,也宣布在中學重新開設烹飪課的計畫。
