Michael Schumacher was called a legend by figures within Formula One after he announced his retirement.
“He will become a legend as a driver,’’ Ferrari director Jean Todt said.
The seven-time world champion, who drives for Ferrari, said after winning the Italian Grand Prix that he will leave the sport at the end of the season. It was his 90th Formula One victory.

“You have to recognize he’s been a great champion,” Red Bull driver David Coulthard said. “It’s the end of an era.”
Schumacher’s little brother, Ralf, who is also a Formula One driver, said he had enjoyed racing with his brother.
“I’ve enjoyed racing with him and I wish him all the best both for the championship and for the future,’’ Ralf Schumacher said.
“It is a pity for Formula One to lose such a great champion,’’ Red Bull boss Gerhard Berger said. “But the time to stop comes to everyone.”
Mario Theissen, motor sports chief at BMW, said it was a “dramatic end of a dramatic and equally successful career.” He added, “I am pretty sure it’s a final decision,” Theissen said.
Norbert Haug, motor sports chief at Mercedes, wasn’t so sure.
“Rumors will start as soon as tomorrow about when he’s going to come back,” Haug said.
Helmut Digel, a vice president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), said Schumacher made a “smart decision.”
“When you retire too late, you damage your reputation. Michael Schumacher quit (while) he is still world class. You can only wish that all athletes made such decisions,” Digel said.(AP)

BMW賽車部門總監馬利歐.黑森稱這個消息為「戲劇性又成功生涯的戲劇性結束」。他補充說︰「我相當確信這是他最後的決定。」
賓士賽車部門總監羅伯特?豪格則持保留態度。
毫格說︰「明天就會有他打算何時重返車壇的謠言。」
國際田徑總會副會長赫穆特.迪戈表示,舒馬克做出了「明智決定」。
迪戈說︰「你太晚退休,就會損傷自己名聲。舒馬克選擇在享譽國際時退出。你只能期盼所有運動員也做出同樣的決定。」
