If you wanted to bake something, what would you use? Many people would simply go into their kitchens and turn on their electric ovens. However, in many parts of the world people bake with tandur ovens, like the ones in this picture.
Tandur ovens are traditional ovens made out of clay, and they work very well. They can get up to 480oC! Tandur ovens work as both ovens and stoves. First, you build a strong fire in the bottom of the oven. Then you cook food on hot stones placed on top of the oven.
When your food has finished cooking and the fire has died down, a tandur oven can be used to bake flat bread. The bread is cooked on the inside walls of the oven, and it only takes about two or three minutes to cook. For bread to cook in a tandur oven, the oven must be between 350oC and 450oC.
