Light from far away

PHOTO: EPA

This picture shows a group of stars far away from Earth. Normally, you couldn't see them this well, but this picture was taken by a very powerful telescope.

The first time light from this group of stars came to Earth was in September 2002. But these stars have been shining much longer than that.

These stars started shining over 100 million years ago. The reason the light took so long to get to Earth is that these stars are so far away.

You might think that anything that takes 100 million years to get somewhere is slow, but light travels really fast. In space, where there is nothing to slow it down, light travels about 300 million meters in ONE second!
