    Weight lifting

    Saturday, Dec 03, 2005,Page 13

How much weight do you think you could lift?

That depends on how strong you think you are. Professional weight lifters are very strong. They can lift weights that are much heavier than they are themselves. This professional weight lifter is lifting weights at a competition. Whoever can lift the most weight wins.

To lift weights this heavy, you have to use the right technique, otherwise you might hurt yourself. People's legs are much stronger than their backs. This weightlifter is keeping his back very straight so that most of the weight is on his legs. He is also keeping his arms very straight for the same reason.
    Do you know?
    LIFTING RECORD
The most anybody has ever lifted at a weight lifting competition is 472.5kg, set by an Iranian man at the 2004 Summer Olympics. That means that that man lifted a weight which was more than four times heavier than he was!
