    Salt farming

Do you know where the salt that you eat comes from?

There are many different ways to make salt. One way is to take it from water. Salt water is water that has salt in it, and fresh water is water that does not have salt in it.

The salt farmers in this picture build these little pools and then fill them with salt water. During the day the sun heats the pools of salt water and evaporates the water. After all the water is gone, the farmers harvest the salt that is left on the ground.

Salt farmers in China have been making salt in this way for more than 1,300 years. People have faster ways of making salt, but making salt this way gives it a special taste.
    Do you know?
    Salting the earth

Plants will not grow if there is a lot of salt in the dirt. A long time ago armies used to put salt on the land of their enemies so that their crops wouldn't grow. They called this "salting the earth."
