    Fuzzy friends

The animals in this picture are called squirrel monkeys. Even though their name may be a little confusing, they are monkeys, not squirrels.

They look very cute crawling up the side of their cage in the German zoo where they live.

Even though they're so cute, squirrel monkeys didn't really become popular until the 1970's. At that time, there was a craze among children for a funny book about a girl named Pippi Longstocking.

Pippi Longstocking lived with one friend and no grownups. Her friend's name was Mister Nielson, and he was a squirrel monkey, just like these guys.

A NEW HOME, A NEW NAME
These monkeys are living far from home. Most squirrel monkeys live in South or Central America. In Germany, they have a a different name. They are called "skull monkeys" because of the black and white markings on their faces.
