Fishing with nets

PHOTO: AFP

The man is this picture is doing a kind of fishing called cast netting.

Cast netting is an old way of fishing. Cast netting is sometimes more convenient than regular fishing because you don't need a boat and you don't need bait.

But in some ways, cast netting can be harder than regular fishing. You must hold the net in a special way so that when you throw it, it can open correctly.

The edges of the net have little weights put onto them so that they will be heavy. This way, the outside part of the net goes down into the water quickly and catches fish inside. Then, you have to pull up the net quickly and carefully and look at all your fish!

The word of the day

餌 (er3)

I need these carrots as bait, because I'm trying to catch a rabbit.

我需要這些蘿蔔當餌,因為我試著要抓一隻兔子。
