Taking stock of US trade policy

While it is unlikely that any of the US presidential hopefuls will make significant changes to current trade policy, differences in their attitudes toward China's WTO bid could prove significant further down the road:

One hopes, of course, that Gore would put the welfare of those impoverished masses ahead of his own political ambitions. For most developing countries, open trade offers the best hope of salvation. Unfortunately, Gore is making unwise promises he may eventually be forced to keep.
