Taiwan’s Yani Tseng (曾雅妮) shot a 3-under-par 69 to tie for third place, two strokes behind top-ranked South Korea’s Inbee Park and Norway’s Suzann Pettersen after the second round of the Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship yesterday.
World No. 1 female golfer Tseng shot four birdies and one bogey to card an 8-under two-round total of 136, trailing behind World No. 5 Park and No. 7 Pettersen, who both finished with 10-under two-round totals of 134. Tseng, who finished second in the first round a day earlier, ended the second round tied with Catriona Matthew of Scotland, who scored a 6-under 66.
Tseng said in a press conference after the round that she failed to judge her iron shots properly.
She said her second shots were not as good as they were the previous day, adding that she might try to play a little more aggressively in today’s third round of the competition.
“I’m very happy to finish with a birdie on the last hole and a big save on the No. 17th. So it makes my day,” said the 23-year-old, who fired birdies on holes 2, 6, 13 and 18 and a bogey on the seventh.
Park, who took her lead into the second round with a 3-under 69, said she missed some shots early in the round, but recovered with four consecutive birdies from the sixth hole.
“So the four birdies was the highlight today,” said the 24-year-old Park, who carded five birdies and two bogeys on the round.
Meanwhile, Pettersen, who shot seven birdies and no bogeys for a 7-under 65, said she played “really solid” on the front nine.
Pettersen, 31, who won an LPGA event in South Korea last week, said she was basically trying to stay aggressive on the course. When asked how surprised she was at the calm weather — the Sunrise Golf & Country Club course is notorious for windy conditions — Pettersen said she seized the opportunity.
“I’m really just trying to enjoy this while it lasts because tomorrow it could be a completely different day out there,” she said.
A total of 78 players are competing in the US$2 million tournament in Taoyuan County that concludes tomorrow.
