Typhoon Dujuan could move closer to Taiwan than previously predicted and the eye might pass just north of Taiwan or skirt its northeastern tip, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said yesterday.
At 8pm last night, Dujuan was centered 820km east-southeast of Taipei, moving northwest at 14kph, bureau data showed. The 200km-radius storm’s maximum sustained winds were estimated at 144kph, with gusts of up to 180kph, bureau data showed.
As Dujuan approached, rainfall increased in northern and eastern Taiwan, while areas in southern Taiwan and the central mountains saw scattered thunderstorms.
The Taipei Public Works Department announced that the city would close riverside parks for public barbecuing, a popular activity during the Mid-Autumn Festival, today.
The CWB said it might issue both sea and land warnings today.
The bureau warned people to avoid aquatic activities in coastal areas over the holiday weekend, as there could be elevated waves during high tide.
Moon watching in northern and eastern Taiwan are likely to be affected, but there remain chances to spot a large full moon in the central and southern parts of the nation, the bureau said.
