The Taiwan High Court yesterday ordered a district court in Changhua County to reconsider its decision to grant bail to senior Ting Hsin International Group (頂新國際集團) executive Wei Ying-chun (魏應充).
The Taichung branch of the High Court ruled in favor of prosecutors, who want to keep Wei in detention, and the Changhua District Court is now required to hold another bail hearing, possibly by today.
This marks the second time in a week that the High Court has asked the district court to reconsider its ruling.
The first time was on Monday last week, after the lower court ordered Wei to be released on NT$100 million (US$3.17 million) bail on Jan. 28.
On Tuesday last week, the lower court maintained its bail decision, but increased the amount of bail to NT$300 million, prompting prosecutors to file another appeal.
Wei was indicted in October last year on multiple counts of fraud and violations of food safety laws after Ting Hsin Oil and Fat Industrial Co (頂新製油實業) was found to have sold cooking oils that contained ingredients that were not fit for human consumption.
He was detained for nearly three months before being released on bail.
