Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) and Peng Shuai (彭帥) of China had their perfect record in WTA Tour doubles finals ruined yesterday after a crushing 6-1, 6-0 defeat to Cara Black of Zimbabwe and Sania Mirza of India at the WTA Finals in Singapore.
No. 2 seeds Hsieh and Peng had gone into yesterday’s final with a 12-0 career record in doubles finals, but they failed to create a single break-point chance, while the No. 3 seeds converted six of nine break-point chances to complete a comfortable victory in 59 minutes.
It was Hsieh and Peng’s final match together as a pairing, as well as the end of Black and Mirza’s partnership, with Hsieh and Mirza planning to team up next season.
The cross-strait duo’s partnership has seen them collect Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon last year and the French Open this year, as well as a WTA Finals win last year.
They were also the first world No. 1s from their respective countries, both spending time as the world No. 1 doubles player earlier this year — and for a time joint No. 1s.
“First I would like to thank Peng Shuai,” Hsieh told the WTA Web site. “I wasn’t in really good shape this year, but finally we made it to the WTA Finals and we played really well in our first two matches. In the final, Cara and Sania were just too good — serving well, volleying well — they were just too good today.”
“We wish we could have won today — I don’t think we’ve ever lost 12 games in a row like that, but they’re a really good team,” Peng told the WTA Web site. “Su-wei and I have had some amazing results together and I want to thank her for everything.”
The government is aiming to recruit 1,096 foreign English teachers and teaching assistants this year, the Ministry of Education said yesterday. The foreign teachers would work closely with elementary and junior-high instructors to create and teach courses, ministry official Tsai Yi-ching (蔡宜靜) said. Together, they would create an immersive language environment, helping to motivate students while enhancing the skills of local teachers, she said. The ministry has since 2021 been recruiting foreign teachers through the Taiwan Foreign English Teacher Program, which offers placement, salary, housing and other benefits to eligible foreign teachers. Two centers serving northern and southern Taiwan assist in recruiting and training

Wang told the news conference that testing would continue despite
‘CARRIER KILLERS’: The Tuo Chiang-class corvettes’ stealth capability means they have a radar cross-section as small as the size of a fishing boat, an analyst said President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) yesterday presided over a ceremony at Yilan County’s Suao Harbor (蘇澳港), where the navy took delivery of two indigenous Tuo Chiang-class corvettes. The corvettes, An Chiang (安江) and Wan Chiang (萬江), along with the introduction of the coast guard’s third and fourth 4,000-tonne cutters earlier this month, are a testament to Taiwan’s shipbuilding capability and signify the nation’s resolve to defend democracy and freedom, Tsai said. The vessels are also the last two of six Tuo Chiang-class corvettes ordered from Lungteh Shipbuilding Co (龍德造船) by the navy, Tsai said. The first Tuo Chiang-class vessel delivered was Ta Chiang (塔江)
