A suspect in the 2004 shooting of then-president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and vice president Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) was arrested in China on Wednesday, according to a Taiwanese TV news channel.

Tang Shou-yi (唐守義), who allegedly remodeled the gun used in the March 19, 2004, shooting and made the two bullets that hit Chen and Lu, was arrested in Xiamen, and is likely to be repatriated before the Lunar New Year, Taiwan Television (TTV) said.

Chen and Lu suffered minor wounds after being shot while traveling in an open-top jeep in a campaign motorcade the day before the presidential election.

Police tracked down Tang as the person who had made the bullets and modified the gun and said he later admitted to doing so. He was indicted in the case, but fled the country in August 2006 before his trial was over.

Police also tracked down the suspected shooter, Chen Yi-hsiung (陳義雄), three months after they named Tang as one of the suspects. However, Chen Yi-hsiung was found dead in what was believed to be a case of suicide.

In a DVD sent from Macau in 2006, Tang said he had been forced into making a confession.

Chen Hung-ta (陳宏達), a spokesman for the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office Special Investigation Division, declined to comment on the news report.

Officials at the Criminal Investigation Bureau said they were aware of the report, but could not give any details on the case.
