Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Huang Hsi-yung (黃錫鏞) yesterday won the mayoral by-election in Sansing Township (三星) in Yilan County.

According to data from the Yilan County Election Committee, 17,230 people voted in the by-election, with a turn-out rate of 56.28 percent. Huang received 4,968 votes, while Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) candidate Chen Wen-hsin (陳文新) received 4,640, it added.

The by-election took place because of the sudden death of former Sansing Township mayor Liu Tun-liang (劉燉亮) of the DPP in late August.

Huang said he was thankful for all the support the township’s people had given him and also thanked them for consolidating the DPP’s momentum in the region.

Promising that he would do his best, Huang also said that he would continue Liu’s policies to make Sansing an organic farming town and improve its tourism.

DPP Chairman Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) also expressed gratitude to the people of Sansing for giving the party a chance to serve them, adding that the party would strive to repay that trust.

DPP spokesperson Wang Min-sheng (王閔生) said: “The result reflected people’s dissatisfaction with the performance of President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) and his KMT government.”

KMT spokesperson Yin Wei (殷瑋) said the party respected the results of the by-election and would continue to work to gain the people’s trust.
