A tour bus carrying 39 Chinese tourists lost control and overturned when going past the 110km marker on the southbound side of Highway No. 3, killing the driver immediately and injuring all others on board.
The bus started out from Taipei and was bound for Sun Moon Lake in Nantou (南投), but it started to shake uncontrollably for unknown reasons near the 110km marker, Taiwanese tour guide Chu Kuo-min (朱國民) said.
The 50-year-old driver, Shih Chun-hou (施俊豪), attempted to move the bus into the inner lane and to stop before the bus overturned, Chu said.
The tour group, made up of teachers from the Junior High School attached to the Harbin Institute of Technology, was on an eight-day tour.
The most severe injuries among the 39 appeared to be sustained by Liu Chunfang (劉春芳), who lost all fingers on her right hand except her thumb. Police attempted to find the severed fingers so Liu could have them surgically reattached.
While some of the tourists said the bus seemed to have lost control because of a burst tire, police have yet to comment on the cause of the accident.
The injured were taken to Hsinchu Cathay General Hospital, National Taiwan University Hospital’s Hsinchu branch, Mackay Memorial Hospital Hsinchu branch, Hsinchu Armed Force Hospital, Hsinchu Nanmen Hospital, Miaoli Wei Gong Memorial Hospital, Miaoli Chung Kuang Hospital and Miaoli Cih You Hospital.
