An explosion during a bomb test killed one person and wounded five others yesterday at a government-affiliated testing site north of Seoul, officials said.
The explosion occurred inside an artillery gun when researchers were preparing to test-fire a high explosive artillery shell at around 11:40am, said Kim Young-san, a spokesman for the Defense Acquisition Program Administration.
One person was killed and five injured at the testing site in Pocheon, about 45km north of Seoul and about 30km from the heavily defended border with North Korea.
Three of the injured were receiving medical treatment while the two others were later released from a hospital, he said.
The cause of the explosion remained under investigation, officials said.
Local media reports earlier said three people had been killed and at least 60 injured.
