Mehsud headed Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan — an umbrella organization of more than a dozen militant groups in the lawless tribal region and neighboring Northwest Frontier Province.
His death is a major setback for local Taliban who will have to find a new leader in the coming days.
“Baitullah was a focal point,” said Pakistan’s former interior minister, Aftab Sherpao. “I am not sure whether the Taliban will manage to reorganize.”
