    Taxi fares take a hike for Lunar New Year holiday period

    With the Lunar New Year holidays beginning in a few days, local governments in northern and southern Taiwan have announced taxi fare hikes for the holidays.

    Taipei City's Department of Transportation announced late on Saturday night that the fare hike in Taipei City, Taipei County and Keelung would apply from today till next Monday.

    Passengers taking a taxi during the daytime will be charged the night-time fare and an additional NT$20 fee per ride, the department said.

    Those who take a taxi between 11pm and 6am will be charged the night-time fare and an additional NT$40 per ride, it said.

    In Kaohsiung City, a different scheme will apply between tomorrow and next Tuesday.

    Kaohsiung City's Transportation Bureau said taxi passengers will have to pay an additional NT$50 fee on top of the metered taxi fare.

    Passengers will also have to pay an extra NT$10 if they put luggage in the trunk, the bureau said.

    Meanwhile, although Kaohsiung's Rapid Transit System has not officially commenced operation, Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corp (KRTC) said that passengers will be able to ride on the north-south Red Line for free between Friday and next Monday.

    Passengers will be able to get on and off the trains at seven stations in the southern part of the city, including Siaogang (小港), Kaohsiung International Airport, Caoya (草衙), Cianjhen Senior High School (前鎮國中), Kaisyuan (凱旋), Shihjia (獅甲) and Sanduo (三多) Shopping District, the company said.

    Trains will run between 6am and 11pm, every six minutes at peak time and every 10 minutes off-peak, the company said.
