In Taipei, DPP Chairman Yu Shyi-kun said that the UN Secretariat's rejection of Taiwan's application was groundless and urged the public to join the party's signature drive to hold a referendum on joining the UN using the name "Taiwan."
Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) spokesman Su Jun-pin (
Su said that the KMT would deal with international relations in a more reasonable and delicate manner.
"Chen and the DPP have broken the hearts of the Taiwanese ... I urge the DPP not to use diplomatic setbacks as political bargain chips," Su said at KMT headquarters.
When asked for comments, KMT Secretary-General Wu Den-yih (
Chen violated the Constitution by applying for membership as "Taiwan" because the Constitution states that the nation's title is the Republic of China, Wu said.
Meanwhile, China slammed Taiwan's application yesterday, labeling Chen "scum" in some of the strongest language it has used against Taiwan in years.
"The scum of the nation who has attempted to split the country cannot escape the punishment of history in the end," the Xinhua news agency quoted an unnamed official with China's Taiwan Affairs Office as saying.
"This has once again proved that Chen Shui-bian is an out and out plotter and saboteur who would not hesitate to sacrifice the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and in the Asia-Pacific," the report said.
Immediately after the UN decision, the Chinese ambassador to the world body derided the Taiwanese application.
