Lu refused to comment on the president's call for self-restraint, saying she "did not have the right to interpret anybody's wise rhetoric."

The president plays a key role in the party primary, she said, adding that she believed she would prevail if the president did not publicly endorse anyone.

Meanwhile, Hsieh said yesterday he would be more than happy to cooperate with Su after the DPP's primary next month.

"What we asked for was a fair competition. A fair competition will be good in uniting DPP members and encouraging us to cooperate with each other," Hsieh said.

Meanwhile, Su's presidential campaign office yesterday directed its discontent at Acting DPP Chairman Chai Trong-rong (蔡同榮), who presided over the joint press conference on Friday.

DPP Legislator Lin Yu-sheng (林育生), who doubles as Su's campaign spokesman, said it was "unreasonable and unfair" for Chai to hold a press conference with Lu, Yu and Hsieh and attack Su.

Chai yesterday defended himself by saying that "someone" had insisted he call the press conference "to show [their] different opinions on the matter."

He declined to identify who that "someone" was.

"I have to listen to opinions from all sides," Chai said. "Besides, I personally also believe such a [campaign] method was unfair to others in the primary."
