Stringent new flight security inspections to be enforced soon

By Shelley Shan  /  STAFF REPORTER

Passengers taking international flights from March are advised to arrive at the airport at least three hours before departure time as the Civil Aeronautics Administration implements a set of new inspections.

All passengers on international flights -- including those transiting to a third country -- will be required to transport liquids, gels and sprays in containers of less than 100ml.

Passengers will be required to put all such items in a sealable and transparent bag so that safety personnel can quickly identify illicit substances. Each passenger will be allowed to carry one bag.

Items purchased at duty-free shops or on planes will also need to be sealed with labels clearly identifying the source.

Powder milk and baby food, as well as liquid medication for diabetics, will be exempt from inspection, provided that these items are reported in advance and permission granted.

The new regulation will also require that the plastic bags used to carry those items be inspected independently, meaning that it will not be possible to check them in with other large-sized luggage or computer bags.

The administration said yesterday it will be coordinating with airline companies to provide plastic bags during the initial stage of implementation.

The US and the EU began implementing similar measures in August last year after British intelligence services received information that terrorists may have been planning to execute an attack against US-bound commercial flights using liquid explosives.
