Taiwanese pitcher Wang Chien-ming's (王建民) complete game, two-hit shutout helped the New York Yankees rout the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 6-0 on Friday, boosting his popularity among US fans.

Two Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislators also present at the stadium said they were moved to tears and overcome by a sense of "Taiwanese pride" over Wang's performance.

Traveling in Washington at the invitation of the American Institute in Taiwan under a visiting researcher program, DPP legislators Shen Fa-hui (沈發惠) and Lee Kun-tse (李昆澤) took time off from their schedule to go to New York and watch Wang's 6-0 shutout at Yankee Stadium.

Shen said his and Lee's eyes brimmed with tears when the stadium cheered for Wang.

When the two lawmakers later ran into a group of jubilant Yankees fans chanting "Chien-ming Wang" in the subway, Lee said they couldn't help but chant along with them.
